Oh Gospel! The Evolution of Praise, Worship & Song is a musical journey, grounded in history and tradition.  It features classical favorites, time honored ballads, inspirational rhythms and original compositions infused with dance, poetry and performances from some today’s most gifted artists; featuring Grammy winning gospel artist Richard Smallwood, American Idol sensation and finalist Jacob Lusk, The Victorian Gospel Singers, The New Masters Trio, soloists Joycelyn Walls and Priscilla Jones, gospel rap artist Rockmell, teen gospel group Lyric and The Oh Gospel Community Mass Choir.  

 

Oh Gospel! The Evolution of Praise, Worship & Song captures the spiritual roots of gospel music originating in Africa, among the tribes and traditions of its people…and that is where the musical odyssey will begin. The internationally acclaimed dynamic Sankofa Dance Theater of Baltimore, Maryland will launch the celebration with rhythms and dance that will inspire the birth a new musical genre.  We travel the musical timeline from the Ivory Coast, through the Door of No Return to the slave trade of North America.  Gospel artists will recreate the magnificent passion of song that energized a peoples’ hunger for freedom and worship during one of the darkest periods in our history. 

 

Oh Gospel! showcases the miracle of song and its ability to cross all cultures, races, ages and genders.  Even the turbulent Civil Rights Era had to give way to the rising choir of gospel songs echoing through the corridors of time to the usher in the wars of the 60’s and 70’s, the prosperous eighties and recession laden 90’s and finally exploring how it impacts today’s generation.  Oh Gospel! The Evolution of Praise, Worship & Song represents a new era in African American history and culture.
